You really can’t go by brand. It’s about individual models. (Yes, some brands that don’t show up in running specialty stores should be avoided entirely, but if it’s something normal for running stores to carry, then you yourself just need to worry about models.)No, Nike isn’t that bad for running. In fact some models like the Vomeros are often referred to as the best running shoes someone has ever encountered (and I’d tend to agree with that for road running myself). Some people do suggest sticking to only the Bowerman line of shoes for road running though (which would include the Structure Triax).Nike does get a bit of a bad rap for also putting out gimmicky shoes like the Shox, however. They also sometimes get a negative reputation for dramatically changing and overhauling shoes that didn’t require it and were very positively reviewed prior — they sometimes ruin great things. They also are most likely to experiment with some of the shoes they put out, which sometimes are pretty good (like the Lunars), or sometimes seem like a joke. Sometimes they’ll do things like the Nike Plus system which can be useful for many, but the sensor pocket in some models will interfere with an otherwise great shoe, and so on. Superficially, all those things can make Nike seem somewhat unreliable when it comes to running shoes. Some salespeople also carry a bit of resentment for Nike for being such a large powerful company, and for being one that can sometimes seem more focused on marketing, trends, and money than on the athletics themselves. They’ll tilt towards the smaller operations that are more likely to limit the sports they do, or that are even running specific. If nothing else, they can like a variety of products rather than just risking massive Nike taking over everything. I’d imagine Nike carries more clout than some other brands in the shops too — they probably don’t have to be as courteous or negotiate, etc., in the way some other brands would, since they readily have the power to “walk away” from stores if they want to.Anyway, I don’t think you can say that Nike universally makes bad running shoes. I do think it reasonable to say that you need to pay attention to individual models though, and do need to realize that Nike is more likely to occasionally be experimenting with something or trying a new gimmick. And I do personally tend to agree with those who say to mainly stick to the Bowerman line (including the Structure Triax) — though I might occasionally consider things like the Lunars or Frees.
